Banks across the UK are racing to deploy AI for fraud detection, collections, operations, and insight. But every gain also widens the threat surface.

At a recent CRO roundtable hosted by Shard Financial Media and sponsored by C&R Software, most banks confirmed they’re already using AI, but still wrestling with how to innovate without multiplying risk. For now, teams tend to apply AI to known processes because training on familiar outcomes feels safer than letting models act without precedent.
The real challenge is moving beyond that comfort zone without taking on uncontrolled exposure. Much of that comes down to architectural choice. Some banks are bolting AI onto a maze of legacy systems and point solutions. Others are building AI as a native layer that’s centrally orchestrated, governed, and auditable. The first approach feels faster until you try to secure it. The second requires more discipline, but it’s the only route to AI you can genuinely stand behind.
Connecting AI Natively to Your Architecture
AI native means three things.
First, you know where AI lives. Critical models and agents are registered like any other key asset. You understand which services they support, what data they use, what controls surround them, and who’s accountable. If you can’t surface this view for your top use cases, you don’t truly understand your risk.
Second, you connect through an AI gateway rather than a tangle of bespoke integrations. Models and agents’ interface with core systems through standard, governed APIs. Identity, logging, and monitoring are consistent. This structure lets you run threat simulations, observe how AI behaves under stress, and recover cleanly when failures occur.
Third, you treat your AI platforms and vendors as part of your architecture. Most serious AI capability will come through cloud and SaaS providers, not custom code. This means you inherit your providers’ governance standards. You need partners who can demonstrate a structured AI management system, not just good intentions on a slide deck.
Certifying Your Standards Are More Than Promises
This is where ISO 42001 starts to matter. It’s the first global standard for managing AI as a formal system, similar in approach to ISO 27001 but focused on governance rather than security alone. Certification guidance is still maturing, but its already drawing a clear line between providers running AI within a structured management framework and those operating on trust alone. A vendor working toward ISO 42001 is committing to defined scope, clear roles, structured risk assessment, documented controls, and lifecycle monitoring. Not just high level principles on a slide.
Competence Over Hope
Defensible AI starts with visibility and proof. When AI sits inside an architecture you understand, supported by vendors who can demonstrate governance, you gain real control. You can show where AI operates, how it’s monitored, and how incidents would be detected and contained.
Ask yourself: if someone requested a list of your top AI use cases tomorrow, the data they touch, the vendors involved, and the controls protecting them, how quickly could you produce a pack you would be confident taking into an FCA meeting? If the answer is "not soon," the issue isn’t ambition. It’s architecture. Get that foundation right and every other AI conversation becomes easier. This is the real path forward.
