Last night the winners of the Turnaround, Restructuring and Insolvency (TRI) Awards 2020 were revealed in an interactive digital broadcast, sponsored by CAPA.

The televisual format was a historic precedent for the 13th annual awards ceremony, which took place after the CPD-certified TRI Conference, another digital broadcast that featured expert presentations and panels on new pre-pack rules, private prosecutions in insolvency, the rescue of Carluccio’s, anti-fraud measures and other key topics.

The independent judging panel for the awards consisted of 18 judges working in chief executive, director and partnership roles across companies and organisations including the Insolvency Service, Begbies Traynor Group, KPMG, Smith & Williamson, Norton Rose Fulbright, Eversheds Sutherland, Pinsent Masons, FTI, Quantuma and others.

The panel was brought together for a digital judging day last month where they scored 62 shortlisted entries across 19 categories.

Comedian Justin Moorhouse, famed for his appearances on Live at the Apollo, Comedy Roadshow and 8 Out of 10 Cats, hosted the ceremony.

The awards opened with The Sabin Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry, which was posthumously awarded to Matt Dunham, who sadly passed away this July. A tribute to his career was delivered by Phil Duffy, managing director of the global restructuring advisory practice at Duff & Phelps, who spoke of Matt’s 30 years of experience in the insolvency and restructuring profession, advising on a number of high-profile cases including the charity Kids Company.

As well as a reputation for restructuring expertise around football clubs, Matt excelled in the not-for-profit sector, where he became acknowledged nationally for his advisory and restructuring work. This helped him achieve one of his proudest career achievements: Helping to save a national adoption charity, the British Association for Adoption and Fostering.

After the Sabin award presentation, notable big winners on the night included ReSolve, StepChange Debt Charity and SIA Group, which all walked away with two awards.

The awards supported the charity Shooting Star Children’s Hospice.

Sponsors of the TRI Awards were CAPA, Gordon Brothers, Howard Kennedy, Manolete Partners, Moon Beever Solicitors, and Smith & Williamson.
