Credit Strategy were joined by Frances Coulson, Head of Insolvency and Litigation, Moon Beever in our latest 60 second interview

Q: What kind of work/cases have you been working on since lockdown?

A: A real mixture- it has been busy in insolvency litigation especially fraud related, but I also saw some admins in areas you might expect and a fair bit of advisory. The whole team has been kept busy though I would always say there is room for more.

Q: When do you think we’ll start to see an increase in corporate insolvencies?

A: Current thinking is I think Q2 2021, starting to see more but I think it might be a bit slower than that maybe nearer Q3- depends on ongoing government support programmes I think but there seems to be little resolution to the commercial property problems which also may push things forward.

Q: What advice would you give to the next generation of people working in either turnaround, restructuring or insolvency?

A: Work hard and enjoy it. It is the most varied and interesting field there is and you are lucky to have stumbled upon it!

Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge, or issue, for those working to rescue businesses?

A: We have a largely stable government and economy, and a sympathetic and commercial regulatory accounting and judicial environment all of which is a very good start- so I would say availability of finance, and landlord issues. Lenders will have to be prepared to assess and finance viable businesses, and unlike the 2008 crisis not continue to allow zombies to drain the economy and slow growth and progress. I think staffing in insolvency practices is already an issue and may be even more difficult in 2021 if there is the expected increase in work, so there may be a skills gap.

Q: Without giving too much away, what do you hope delegates will learn from your session at the TRI Conference?

A: The things they will need to look out for in investigating companies and the way the public and private sector can rise to the challenge together.

Q: What other sessions are you looking forward to at this year’s TRI Conference?

A: My partner Robert Paterson’s panel with Tony Groom and Blair Nimmo on pre packs. The changes there will cause an interesting debate I think.
