Discover insights from Matthew Jones, Head of Risk Decision & Data Science at Nationwide, as he shares his perspective ahead of the Women & Diversity in Credit Conference panel, “Breaking the ally stigma: How senior leaders can drive real change through allyship.”
The area I work in Financial Services is highly quantitative focussing on advanced statistics and AI. The biggest challenge in building more diversity in this growing area is the under-representation of key groups in STEM University related subjects.
This is particularly the case for females, ethnic minorities and disadvantaged backgrounds.
These challenges persist due lack of visible role models, and stereotypes relating to STEM “not being for them” despite the great career opportunities it can unlock.
The role leadership should play in this, is actively encouraging diverse members of their teams to role model and inspire future generations, look to sponsor and not just mentor to create opportunities for underrepresented talent and themselves role model inclusive behaviour.
Male leaders are crucial accelerators of inclusion as it demonstrates diversity is a priority, mentor and sponsor individuals from underrepresented groups and encourages an open working culture that is safe for all.
Attending the event will help as it provides a platform to learn from others, broaden understanding on inclusion and shows a commitment to the cause.
My key advice would be:
Try your best, and have fun. This is a mantra I have with my young children, it is really important to apply yourself and give it your best go, and equally as important is that you need to be happy doing it.
I am looking forward to learning more about diversity, and also to networking with people from across the industry in a relaxed environment.
See Matthew speak at this year’s Women & Diversity in Credit Conference.
