What was your journey to your role today, would you say it’s been a typical career path?

Not particularly. I studied originally to be a Mining Engineer (working in the coal mines of Stoke-on-Trent and Derbyshire). But I pivoted to study for an MSc and PhD in Operational Research at the University of Birmingham. I then started a job at HSBC Asset Finance as a Credit Risk analyst and the rest... as they say... is history. You could say I went from coal mining to data mining.

If you weren’t working in credit and financial services, what would you be doing?

I’m obsessed with music and would like to have been a music/record producer (definitely not in front of the microphone).

What is something that not many people know about you?

My earlier "career" as a Mining Engineer working in the coal pits of Stoke-on-Trent and Derbyshire

What is the most significant challenge facing the credit/financial services industry today?

I would say balancing the immense predictive power of complex AI and alternative data with the strict transparency, fairness, and "good outcome" mandates demanded by the FCA’s Consumer Duty.

What trend or development are you excited about in the credit / financial services sector?

Open Finance shifts our industry from reactive scoring to proactive support. We can use real-time data to intervene before defaults happen, driving better consumer outcomes and fulfilling Consumer Duty.

What do you hope to take away from Credit Week 2026?

Ensuring I have my finger on the pulse of new industry developments and regulation, but mainly to grow my industry network.

What advice would you give to someone who’s starting their career in the industry?

Master the new tools - AI, Open Banking, and real-time data - but remember that your true value lies in human judgment.

Join Karl-Magnus at Credit Week 2026!
